It's amazing how much compute power it takes - it's not the 1MHz CPU, but the SID and the interactions with the VIC which take a lot of cycle by cycle care and attention.
Personally I rather like the Teensy 3.5 because, although it's got a slower clock speed, it has 5V tolerant I/Os.
