Here's a great writeup of the journey from ignorance to competence: getting sectors off old floppy disks, without the benefit of the host machine. Much good explanation within of how to measure and make sense of the pulses coming from a floppy drive, how to account for variation, and how to persevere.

A new Commodore 64 is coming!
A new Commodore 64 is coming!
Yes, you read that right. Gideon's Logic Architectures, creator of the amazing 1541 Ultimate II+ cartridge, are working on a new C=64 motherboard that implements the original C=64 hardware in an FPGA and adds some features. Like integrated Ultimate 1541 II+ functionality, HDMI output, single 12v power supply requirements, Ethernet, and more. And since it's FPGA powered, it can be continuously improved, bug fixed, and upgraded.
IMO this is a much more attractive product than the C=64 Reloaded.
